 USMC Family Military Visits Regulations and Procedures.

Family members can visit U.S. Marine Corps installations and overseas medical facilities under specific eligibility, authorization, and access control rules.

1. Eligibility for Visits.

Under DoDI 6000.20 and Medical Travel: Family Members and Non-Medical Attendants guidance, family members may be authorized to visit if the service member is:

  • Active-duty or Reserve Component (RC) on active duty: Seriously wounded, ill, injured, or with a serious mental disorder, or when death is imminent, hospitalized anywhere in the world.

  • RC on active duty with a combat-related injury: Hospitalized in the U.S. for treatment of that injury.

  • RC entitled to disability pay: Physically disabled from duty-related illness/injury or death imminent, hospitalized anywhere in the world.

  • Retired Service member: Retired solely due to a wound, illness, injury, or imminent death, hospitalized anywhere in the world media.defense.gov.

2. Authorization Process.

  • Medical Facility & Commander Approval: The attending physician/surgeon and the service member’s commander or head of the medical facility must determine in writing that the family member’s presence is necessary for the service member’s health and welfare media.defense.gov.

  • Number of Visitors: Up to three family members may be authorized at one time; the service member can change selections during treatment media.defense.gov.

  • Selection: Service member chooses up to three; if unable, the medical facility or commander selects them media.defense.gov.

3. Travel Allowances.

Authorized family members receive standard travel and transportation allowances under the Joint Travel Regulations (JTR), including:

  • Round-trip government-procured transportation (air, train, etc.).

  • Per diem and other allowances as per JTR Chapter 2 media.defense.gov+1.

4. Site Access Control for Gold Star & Surviving Families.

For Gold Star and surviving family members visiting installations:

  • Must complete the Visitor Control Process (VCP) and enroll in the electronic physical access control system (ePACS).

  • Must provide identity proofing and background checks as per MCO 5530.13.

  • Acceptable purposes include visits to on-site memorials or events honoring the family Marines.mil.

  • Site Commanders must ensure all access control personnel are trained and policies are updated within 30 days of the MARADMIN Marines.mil.

5. General Visitor Rules.

  • Sponsor Requirement: All visitors need a sponsor (service member, DoD civilian, retiree, or family member with a valid DoD ID) who vouches for them legalclarity.org.

  • ID Requirements: REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, U.S. passport, or other acceptable federal ID is required; non-compliant IDs must be paired with an acceptable credential legalclarity.org.

  • Background Screening: Visitors undergo security vetting before being issued a pass legalclarity.org.

In summary: To visit a U.S. Marine Corps installation or overseas medical facility, family members must meet eligibility criteria, obtain written medical and command approval, follow travel regulations, and comply with site access control requirements. Gold Star and surviving family members have additional VCP and ePACS enrollment steps.
